CMS Women's Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw with Undefeated Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team led undefeated Cal Lutheran 2-0 at the half, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie after the Regals scored twice in the second half on Wednesday evening in a SCIAC contest at Pritzlaff Field.

With the tie, CMS now stands at 6-6-3 overall and 4-4-2 in SCIAC, and can clinch a postseason bid with a win at Redlands on Wednesday. Cal Lutheran moves to 13-0-4 overall and 8-0-2 in league play with the tie. 

Annie McKinley and Echo Malinowski-Cunnnigham scored goals for CMS just 2:21 apart late in the first half, both off assists from Carmel Randolph. The first came at the 37:50 mark when McKinley was able to get on the back end of a Randolph free kick and one-touch a shot from just outside the six-yard box into the net. 

Just over two minutes later, Randolph took a penalty kick that was cleared back outside the box. On the second try, she bent a cross to the far post, and Malinowki-Cunningham was there inside the top of the six-yard box to snap a header into the net for her first collegiate goal and give the Athenas a 2-0 lead heading into the break. 

Cal Lutheran, was able to score in the 70th minute on a goal from Avery West, who converted a long diagonal pass from Ally Fisicaro. Just 6:34 later, the Regals scored again when West was able to head a long diagonal ball from Eden Quiroz into the box, where Isabelle Veljacic finished. 

Sadie Brown finished with three saves for CMS in the tie, while Logan Duford had four saves for the Regals. 

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it closes out the regular season at Redlands, where they can play themselves into the SCIAC Tournament with a win.
