CMS Women's Soccer Keeps Surging with 4-0 Road Win over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - Four different Athenas scored goals, and Andra Marinescu had three saves for her first collegiate shutout as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team picked up a 4-0 road win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, CMS now stands at 4-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the SCIAC, getting back to even after an 0-3 start with four straight shutouts, going 3-0-1 in that span (with the tie a 0-0 draw with No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer). Caltech slips to 0-9-1 overall and 0-7 in the league with the loss.

Ava Schmitt got CMS on the board in the 33rd minute when she scored from the top of the box, which was followed less than eight minutes later by the first collegiate goal from first-year Emily Bersin, off an assist from Ivy Duran.

The second half started the way the first ended, as CMS put pressure on and came away with a goal less than five minutes in, the first collegiate tally for junior Gigi Adiyia. Kaitlyn Helfrich capped off the scoring with 2:49 to go when she scored off a Schmitt pass.

CMS controlled play throughout, outshooting Caltech 22-7, putting 13 on frame to just three for the Beavers. The Athenas also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it returns home to face Occidental at 7 p.m.
