Holden's Goal Gives CMS Women's Soccer 1-0 Road Win at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Tori Holden volleyed in a corner kick from Kaitlyn Helfrich in the 59th minute and Sadie Brown made five saves for her third straight shutout as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team got back in the thick of the SCIAC Tournament chase with a 1-0 road win at La Verne.

With the win, CMS now stands at 3-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league play, including 2-0-1 since an 0-3 start. That stretch has included a 1-0 win at Whittier and a 0-0 tie at home with No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer, which came into the game a perfect 9-0 on the season. La Verne falls to 3-4-4 overall and 1-2-3 in the SCIAC with the loss.

CMS managed just one shot in the first half, as the Leopards had the better of the play, outshooting CMS 6-1 and forcing Brown to make three saves. However, the Athenas flipped the script in the second half, outshooting La Verne 5-2.

One of those shots produced the game's only goal, as CMS took a corner kick on the left side. Helfrich drove a bending ball towards the near post, and Holden lept in the air and flicked the ball in from inside the six-yard box to put the Athenas in front.

CMS nearly doubled the lead just seven minutes later, but Flora Glantz hit the crossbar in the 67th minute. Brown made two final saves in the last 15 minutes to preseve the win, including one in the 90th minute.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Caltech, hoping to pick up its third straight road win in conference.
