Brown's 11 Saves, Glantz's First-Half Goal Give Athenas Soccer 1-0 Win at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Sadie Brown had 11 saves to help a first-half goal from Flora Glantz hold up as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 1-0 road win over Whittier on Saturday evening.

With the win, CMS moves to 2-4-1 on the season, including 1-3 in SCIAC, while Whittier slips to 1-3-2 overall and 0-2-2 in league play.

Glantz scored the only goal of the contest at the 27:07 mark when she converted on a rebound on a shot from Kaitlyn Helfrich. CMS outshot Whittier 14-6 in the first half, and had chances for more, as Tori Holden hit the crossbar, and Glantz nearly had a second one minute after she scored, but had her shot denied by defender Juli Veneri. Beth Juarez had seven saves in the first half as well for the Poets.

Whittier made a push for an equalizer late, but Brown had five saves in the last 16 minutes to keep it a 1-0 game, with a little help from her best friend, as Alanis Cervantes hit the post for the Poets in the 77th minute.

Helfrich had six shots for CMS (five on net) and Glantz had four (three on net), as CMS finished with a 23-16 advantage in shots.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer for a 7 p.m. contest.
