CMS Women's Soccer Opens 2023 With 2-0 Win over George Fox

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Annie McKinley broke a 0-0 tie midway through the second half with a goal off a corner kick, and first-year Kateri Trujillo sealed it with a goal in collegiate debut in the closing minutes as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team took a 2-0 win over George Fox on Friday morning in its 2023 season opener.

The first goal was set up off a corner kick, as Riley Zitar played a perfect ball into the box, and McKinley was able to slip it into the net from the top of the six-yard box at the 62:36 mark.

The Athenas added an insurance goal when Laurel Ovenell won a 50-50 ball in the CMS defensive half of the field. She played a long ball up the right sideline to spring Trujillo, who got in behind the defense from a sharp angle on the right edge of the box. Ava Schmitt crashed down the middle to help draw the defense's attention and Trujillo was able to beat the George Fox goalie from a sharp angle to put the game away with 4:52 left in the contest.

Sadie Brown had two saves for CMS in the first half, while Andra Marinescu got the win by finishing off the shutout in the second half. McKinley helped anchor the defense in front of the two goalies, which also included Ivy Doran in the middle, and first-years Ava Allen and Echo Malinowski-Cunningham on the outside.

CMS will be back in action on Sunday when it takes on UC Santa Cruz for an 11 a.m. contest.
