CMS Women's Soccer Remains Undefeated, Picks up 2-0 Road Win at La Verne in SCIAC Opener

LA VERNE, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Lauryn Jeans and first-year defender Taylor Arakaki scored goals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team took a 2-0 win over La Verne on Saturday evening in its 2019 SCIAC opener.

With the win, CMS remains undefeated in the early part of the 2019 campaign, standing at 5-0-1 through its first six games. The Athenas were unbeaten in their non-conference schedule, with only a 1-1 tie at UC Santa Cruz preventing them from a completely unblemished record.

Jeans opened the scoring with her second goal of the season, scoring just 8:34 into the contest off a feed from senior midfielder Rhiann Holman. That goal held up as the only one of the game, until Arakaki scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from fellow first-year Lizzie Iwicki with just 11:51 remaining in the contest to make it a 2-0 CMS lead.

CMS didn't need much offense on the day, as the defense held La Verne to only one shot attempt in the entire contest, outshooting the Leopards 7-1. Junior goalkeeper Cam Hamson saved the only Leopard shot of the night, which came from Danielle Bennett in the 63rd minute.

CMS also held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks, as the defense of center backs Grace Pratt and Gracyn Buenconsejo, and outside backs Katrina Ostrom and Ava Sherry (as well as sophomore Samantha Ree and first-year Olivia Tuffli off the bench) helped prevent La Verne from getting much of anything in its offensive third.

The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday for their SCIAC home opener, when they take on Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
