The CMS-ence of Gabby Clouse

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Gabby Clouse, a starting midfielder on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team, has seen South America become a consistent focal point of her collegiate experience.

While South America would seem like a logical destination for a soccer player, Clouse's travels below the equator have not been to watch World Cups or partake in international tournaments. Rather, as a human biology major at Claremont McKenna, she has used her travels to pursue her personal passion in the ethics of international healthcare.

Clouse spent the summer of 2018 in Ecuador, where she collaborated with with teams of medical professionals to improve efficiency within hospitals.  "I was shadowing doctors in different types of healthcare facilities," she said. "That was a really meaningful experience for me to learn a lot about the different healthcare challenges that people face throughout the world."

During her CMC career, Clouse has also been a public health board member for the five-colleges club Refresh Bolivia, which works to improve public health in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Last summer, she stayed in Claremont to work for a biomedical engineering lab, developing a product which could help to expedite diagnostic speeds while building data points for her senior thesis.

Clouse has been on the SCIAC All-Academic team all three years due to her proficiency in the classroom. On the field, she played in every game as a first-year when CMS won the SCIAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and she and the other four members of the Class of 2020 hope to bring the Athenas back to the postseason again this year.

While the championship remains a significant memory in Clouse's college career, and a second one would be even sweeter in her final go-round, her experience with CMS women's soccer is far greater than what's happened between the lines.

"Being an Athena has meant that I've been a part of a bigger community," she said. "Whatever you want to do, you are going to have people who support you, whether it is through soccer or through academics or through extracurriculars. It's really meant a lot to me to have a group of people who's always here for me with whatever I need."
