Athenas and Regals Draw for Second Time

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - For the second time this season, 90 minutes was not enough to decide a winner between the Regals and the Athenas on the pitch. Saturday night's tilt at Cal Lutheran was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and after two scoreless overtime periods, CMS and the Regals played to their second draw of the season.

Sam Cornejo scored for Cal Lutheran in the 20th minute to take an early lead, but Megan Lo (CMC) leveled the match with a tally in the 55th minute for her second goal of the season. In goal, Claire Hamson (CMC) made five saves for CMS.

Katrina Ostrom (CMC) had the first quality look in the match when she put a shot on goal in the fourth minute, but it was turned away by the Regals' keeper. Nine minutes later the Athenas had another look, but a shot from Rhiann Holman (CMC) went high over the bar.

Cal Lutheran had their first look in the 15th minute, but Hamson turned the attempt away. The Regals would not have to wait long for another look at goal. Sam Cornejo lofted a shot from the left side in the 20th minute to the far post. Her shot found the net and gave the Regals the 1-0 lead.

Following the goal, play moved primarily to the midfield with each team only attempting one shot each over the final 25 minutes of the half.

Cal Lutheran looked as if they were going to double the lead early in the second-half. Back-to-back shots in the 46th and 47th minutes by Alexandra Albaeck and Kali Youngdahl hit the cross bar, but the Athenas were about to recover and clear the ball out of danger.

Nine minutes after the near misses for the Regals, the Athenas would strike with a goal off the foot of Megan Lo in the 55th minute. Lo put a shot past a diving keeper on the left side to even the score at 1-1.

In the final 35 minutes of regulation, Cal Lutheran took eight shots and forced Hamson to make four saves. Hamson answered the call and the game plotted along to overtime tied 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Cal Lutheran had the more dangerous chances in overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net. Megan Lo took the only shot for CMS in the 20 extra minutes, but her attempt in the 103rd minute was saved. In the 106th minute, Cal Lutheran's Kali Youngdahl found space on the right side of the box. Hamson came well off her line and met Youngdahl just as she was attempting her shot. Hamson saved the attempt and preserved the 1-1 score.

Two late shots by the Regals went high over the bar and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

With four conference games remaining in the regular season, the Athenas sit in fourth-place in the SCIAC with a 3-3-4 record. They will next take the field on Wednesday when they travel to Chapman to take on the Panthers who are 2-8 in the SCIAC this season.
