Lo’s equalizer earns CMS a draw

Thousand Oaks, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team held on for a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Cal Lutheran (11-1-3, 5-1-3) Wednesday night to remain in second place in the SCIAC. Katelyn Kimball found the net for the Regals in the 40th minute, and sophomore Megan Lo (CMC) broke off on the counterattack to score the game-tying goal in the 85th minute to send the game to overtime. Senior Kelly McConnell (HMC) recorded six saves and made several key blocks to keep the Athenas in the game while Lo and senior Katelyn Faust (CMC) led the team in shots taken at three apiece.

The match started out fairly rough as both sides tried to find their rhythm on possession. It wasn't until midway in the half when the Regals started to look more threatening. Cal Lutheran's Kali Youngdahl created a dangerous shot attempt from the left side of the box towards the right side of the net, but McConnell made a diving save to prevent the opening goal.

Towards the 40th minute Kimball had the ball at several feet away from the box. The Regals' forward managed to evade a closing defender and launch a shot from distance. The ball bounced off the lower crossbar and inside the line to give Cal Lutheran the 1-0 lead.

The second half started off in similar as the prior half as both sides struggled to find rhythm with their possessions. The Athenas slowly showed more intent on the attack as they began to advance more players on the offensive end. Their high pressure finally paid off in the 85th minute when Lo broke off on the counter attack and made an incredible solo effort at goal to tie the game.

Overtime was fairly quiet as neither side was able to capitalize. Senior Makella Brems (CMC) provided the Athenas' best attempt in the 99th minute, but her shot was well-saved by Regals' goalie Coral Hasley. In the 108th minute, Ryley Settles almost won the game for Cal Lutheran, but McConnell came up big with a game-saving block to keep game tied 1-1 until the whistle.

The Athenas (9-5-1, 6-2-1) will return home on Saturday, Oct. 15 to host Occidental College (7-4-1, 4-4-1) at 11 a.m.
