Conceded goal in 2OT brings Sixth Street heartbreak for Athenas

CLAREMONT, CA - A conceded goal in double-overtime proved to be the deciding factor for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team (8-5-0, 6-2-0) as they took a hard 1-0 loss to rival Pomona-Pitzer (8-1-2, 7-0-2) on Saturday night. The Athenas looked to be in control during the game, outshooting the Sagehens 12 to 9 and seeing six shots on target while Pomona only saw three. However, a clutch goal from Agueda Dudley-Berrios was all Pomona needed to win the game. Senior Katelyn Faust (CMC) led the Athenas in shots, taking four chances and seeing two on target, while freshman Sarah Tocher (CMC) took two shots, both of which were on target. Senior Kelly McConnell (HMC) made two saves as the defense kept the Sagehens at bay for majority of the match while Corey Goelz had a busy night with six saves.

The Athenas did not find their best chance at goal until the 89th minute when Faust took a shot at goal that was well-blocked by the keeper. Senior Laynee Laube (CMC) followed up with another close shot, but that too was saved.

In the 108th minute, Brianna Lau saw a long pass and flicked the ball towards the right wing with her head. Abby Onderwyzer Gold controlled the ball from the right side and delivered a short pass to Dudley-Berrios who was outside the box, who then delivered a looping shot over McConnell's head to end the game.

The Athenas will face Saint Katherine on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. and then hit the road against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
