Four Athenas selected to NSCAA All-West Region teams
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Soccer Coaches Association
of America (NSCAA) announced its 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA
Division III Women's All-West Region teams and four
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s soccer players were selected,
with two second and two third-teamers. With four players being
named All-Region, CMS tied with three Texas schools and Pacific
Lutheran for the most All-West Region recipients in 2014.
Senior defender Samantha Kunz (CMC) and sophomore
midfielder Makella Brems (CMC) are second-team
selections while senior defender Sara Tweedy (HMC)
and junior forward Darrah Shields (CMC) have been
named to the third team. These are the first All-Region selections
for the Athenas since 2012, when two players made the team. All
four of the Athenas’ All-Region recipients were
All-Conference selections in 2014 as well.
Kunz played in 21 matches for the Athenas with one goal – a game-winner – and two assists, while Brems led the team and tied for the conference lead with eight goals on the season. Tweedy played in 19 matches and had two goals – one-game winner – in playing a central role along with Kunz on the Athena defense. Shields led the team and the conference in points (20) with seven goals and six assists.
CMS won the SCIAC regular season conference championship in
2014, the team’s first since 2009. CMS went 13-7-1 overall
and 10-4 in conference play.
