The Athenas Notch First Win In Victory Over St. Olaf

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team beat St. Olaf College 2-1 in a Sunday matinee at Pritzlaff Field. All three goals scored in the game occurred in the first ten minutes of the second half.

The Athenas controlled the ball during the first half taking ten shots and giving junior GK Molly Freed one chance for a save.

CMS started the second half strong and scored in the first minute. Senior F Lauren Phillips crossed the ball from the right side into junior F Isabel Lester who drilled it past St. Olaf's keeper for the first score of the game.

Unsatisfied with a lead of only one goal, the Athenas scored again five minutes later. Phillips took a corner kick for the Athenas and freshman D Hannah Rosenberg knocked it in with a spectacular header goal.

St. Olaf countered the Athenas' attack with a goal of their own in the 55th minute off the foot of senior M Amanda Leone.

The score remained 2-1 for the remainder of the game giving CMS their first victory of the season. The Athenas outshot the Oles 22-10 led by senior M Shaundra Ullman taking five and Phillips with four. The Athenas' record is now 1-1-1.

The Athenas host UC Santa Cruz on Friday (9/13) at 4 pm.
