Athena Offense Comes Alive In Win Over St. Thomas

The women's soccer team was back on the field today for a non-conference match against the visiting St. Thomas Tommies on Sunday.  The Athenas started off strong, stringing passes together and pressuring the tough St. Thomas team.  The passing created several great scoring opportunities early in the first half and CMS was able to score two great goals.  The first goal was scored by Olivia Sylvester after a great inside pass from Isabel Lester (pictured).  Sylvester received the ball at the top of the 18 and took a great first touch that put her in 1 v. 1 with the keeper where she buried her shot into the corner.  Just a short time later, another nice passing series had Shauny Ullman finding Madi Shove who scored her shot for the Athenas' second goal of the game.  The half would end 2-0.

The second half saw continued dominance by the Athenas as the heat took its toll on St. Thomas.  Again, a nice passing series led to Lester finding Shove in behind the defense and she finished her opportunity to make the score 3-0.  Again, within a short time from the third goal, a fourth goal was scored by Lester.  St. Thomas played a short pass off of a goal kick and Lester intercepted a pass between the two center backs and she took a shot that bent around the keeper into the goal.  At 4-0, the Athenas kept pressing, but could not find the back of the net in the final 25 minutes.  The CMS defense recorded their second straight shut out behind solid keeper play from both Molly Freed and Hannah Dunham.

CMS (9-5) goes on the road Wednesday night for a big SCIAC match up against Redlands at 7 pm.
