Women's Soccer Comes From Behind To Win

The Athena soccer team traveled down the road to Chapman to play them for the first time as an official conference opponent on Wednesday.  Chapman started out with incredible energy and drive and took it to CMS.  Unable to find any rhythm, CMS had trouble handling Chapman who threatened several times early in the game and converted in both the 10th and 18th minutes on flurries in front on the CMS goal.  Down 2-0 before it was even half way through the first half shocked CMS.  Still unable to connect passes, the Athenas continued to battle and tried hard to dig themselves out of the hole.  Finally, in the 27th minute, CMS was on the board after Shauny Ullman found Isabel Lester on a corner kick and the Athenas were back in the game.  The half ended with Chapman still ahead 1-2.

CMS was able to regroup at halftime and came out better able to connect passes and to handle the relentless pressure of Chapman.  Both teams created dangerous chances in the second half, but luckily CMS found the net again in the 64th minute to tie up the game.  Again Ullman served a corner that this time found the head of Madi Shove who finished her chance nicely.  Then less than 5 minutes later, CMS went ahead on a long free kick from defender Sara Tweedy that the keeper had trouble handling and Ashley Barhnill was there to put the rebound away.  The game continued to be an even fight with Chapman having more chances toward the end, but the defense held strong and CMS came away with a much needed 3-2 road win.

CMS is back on the road Saturday to take on Whittier at 11:00am.
