Athena Soccer Loses Tough One in 2OT

The CMS Women's Soccer team was back at home Saturday to take on conference foe Redlands in a tough SCIAC match up.  The Athenas started off with some of their best soccer of the year and created several strong chances in the first 15 minutes, but the Bulldog defense held tough.  Against the run of momentum, Redlands was the first on the board in the 18th minute putting the Athenas down 1-0 early.  From that point on, the game became very even with both teams working hard and battling through the heat.  CMS climbed their way back into the game in the 77th minute, when a flurry in front of the Redlands goal resulted in sophomore Liz Augustine (pictured) putting a rebound into the net to tie the game 1-1.  After that the game became very attack minded with both teams creating some great opportunities, but both teams' defenses and keepers were making saves.  As regulation ended, Redlands had a dangerous free kick from 20 yards out that was not converted so the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime period, both teams had chances to win, but the game stayed tied and went to the second overtime.  In the 104th minute, on a CMS defensive breakdown, Redlands got in behind and made a nice cross that beat Athena keeper Molly Freed and CMS fell 2-1 (2OT).

CMS hopes to rebound on Wednesday as the team travels to Chapman.  CMS is now 3-1 in conference and 4-3 overall.
