Athenas Win SCIAC Road Opener

Athenas Win SCIAC Road Opener

The CMS women's soccer team was on the road Wednesday for the first time this season in conference play.  The team traveled to La Verne where they took on a tough Leopards team that was off to a great start this season.  The first half was a battle for possession with both teams working hard.  CMS had a bit more of the run of play, but La Verne was very dangerous with speed on the counter attack.  Athena senior Annie Belanger scored in the 30th minute on a cross from senior Olivia Sylvester to put CMS up 1-0.  That lead would hold until half time.

The second half saw CMS come out with a renewed spirit and commitment to attack and that effort was rewarded with three goals in a 20 minute span, starting with senior Madi Shove finishing off her chance in the 52nd minute from a cross from Sylvester.  In the 65th minute, junior Shauny Ullman (pictured) scored her first goal of the season from a pass back from sophomore Isabel Lester that started with a great run wide left from Sylvester.  Less than four minutes later, Ullman scored again from about 22 yards out on a great shot to the upper right corner.  La Verne did not back down and pressured the CMS defense for the remainder of the game and picked up two goals for their effort in the 76th and 86th minutes.  The game ended with CMS winning 4-2.  The Athena improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 (t1st) in SCIAC play.

CMS returns home this weekend to take on Redlands at 11:00 am Saturday and then the annual alumni game on Sunday at 11:00am.
