Athenas Go Down in SCIAC Tournament Finals on PK's

The CMS Women's Soccer team traveled to #10 Nationally Ranked Cal Lutheran University Saturday night to play in the SCIAC Tournament Finals.  Cal Lu was undefeated in SCIAC play with only one loss on the season to #7 Ranked Hardin-Simmons.  Cal Lu started the game on fire and immediately put the Athenas down a goal in the second minute of play on a great shot to the far post from just inside the box.  CMS bounced back and battled quickly creating a corner kick opportunity but missing their chance.  The game then settled down and both teams created chances in the first half.  CMS had their best chance when So. Kerry Moller found herself inside the box, but had her shot saved.   The score remained 1-0 at half.  Cal Lu again came out hard at the beginning of the second half, quickly amassing several great chances on the Athenas goal but the defense of Fr. keeper Molly Freed, Sr. defender Rosa, Ahn, Sr. defender Julia Nishioka, So. defender Sarah Tweedy, Fr. defender Claire Shum, and So. defender Kerry Moller stood strong.  The Athenas created several good chances on goal as well, and finally scored when fr. Isabel Lester collected a deflected pass on the back post and nailed home her shot to tie the game 1-1.  There were several scoring flurries at both goals in the last 10 minutes of regulation with no team gaining the advantage thus sending the game into overtime.  In OT, Cal Lu had more chances on goal and Free had to make several good saves and Moller saved one off the line.  The CMS attack did create a few solid scoring opportunities, but just could not finish that second goal.  After both 10 minute overtimes, the game was stilled tied 1-1.  NCAA rules then send the game to penalty kicks.  Cal lu was 5-5, while the Athenas shot 4 out of 5 to lose by 1.  It was a great battle by the Athenas who just came up short on their quest to reclaim the SCIAC tournament title.
