Athenas Clinch Tournament Spot With Win Over Leos

The Athenas soccer team traveled the short trip over to La Verne on Saturday night to take on the University of La Verne in a game played at Damien High School.  The previous meeting between the teams saw the game go extra time and CMS won on a penalty kick in the first overtime period.  This game was again a great match between the two teams, with both fighting hard for the win, but CMS pulled out the victory and secured their place in the SCIAC Tournament.  CMS is now 7-5-3 overall and has 22 points in SCIAC play with their 7-3-1 record.

CMS did well in the first half controlling the ball and creating opportunities with the best shot coming from Liz Augustine late in the half.  She nailed a shot from about 25 yards out that hit the cross bar, but La Verne managed to clear the rebound and the half ended 0-0.  The second half saw CMS pick up their play even more and their perseverance paid off when in the 59th minute Madi Shove (pictured) finished off her shot on a great through run and pass from Shauny Ullman.  La Verne picked up their pressure trying to score the equalizer, but CMS defense stood tough and CMS keeper Molly Freed came up with a big time save by tipping a hard shot over the bar to keep the Athenas' lead.  Soon after that, Shove again drove hard on the dribble to the goal and finished her second goal of the game in the 85th minute.  CMS did well to kill the clock and secured the 2-0 win.

With 22 points, CMS is guaranteed to be either the second or third seed in the SCIAC Tournament  The final seeding of the tournament will be decided with the last games of the regular season.  CMS plays their last regular season conference game on the road this Wednesday at Redlands at 7:00 pm.
