Athenas Drop SCIAC Opener To Regals

The women's soccer team lost their home opener 4-0 Wednesday evening to Cal Lutheran.  The Athenas came out hard possessing the ball in midfield, but were unable to get a chance at goal.  On Cal Lu's first corner of the game, the serve went just over keeper Hannah Dunham and Cal Lu was able to knock in a header from about two yards out.  Midway through the first half, after an Athena giveaway in the middle part of the field, Cal Lu countered and sent a cross to a streaking midfielder who finished one time back post from the top of the 18 yard box.  Within minutes of that goal, CMS went down 3-0 on a controversial long shot that hit the cross bar and appeared to bounce out, but was called a goal by the linesman.  Down 3-0 at half, CMS came out with a renewed energy and four forwards to try to score.  Unfortunately, the ball was just not bouncing their way and Cal Lu scored on another counter to make it 4-0.  With just under 30 minutes remaining, the frustration maxed with Scooby Phillips getting a red card for an altercation with a Cal Lu player.  Now, with only 10 players, the Athenas had their best opportunities at goal, but did not have many shots end up on target.  The best chance of the night came from Shauny Uhlman (pictured) who hit the far post on a shot off a cleared corner.

CMS plays the first of four consecutive road games this Saturday, September 17.  They travel to Occidental for a 1:00 game.
