Women's Soccer Beats Bulldogs Late In Double OT

On Wednesday night the CMS Athenas (9-3-3, 6-2-2 SCIAC) faced a battle against the University of Redlands Bulldogs (7-7, 5-4 SCIAC) in a game with playoff implications.  The two teams met with ferocious desire and lots of energy and fought for 105 minutes until the Athenas found the net in sudden death for a 1-0 victory.

The game started out strong, but both teams showed unwavering defense, yielding only a few shots to be seen early on.  Neither team showed dominance, but the effort was clear on both sides.

As the game moved into the second half both teams came closer to getting chances.  However, both goal keepers kept the ball out of the net and the game was sent to overtime.  When it looked as though the Bulldogs were getting close to breaking through the Athenas were able to hold them off with stellar defense.  CMS' hard work paid off, and with less than five minutes left in the second overtime Xana Bartlett (SO, Shoreline, WA) fed a pass to Lizzie van Buskirk (SR, San Rafael).  Van Buskirk laid it off to Kirsten McAfee (SR, Albuquerque, NM) [pictured], who was held onside by a Bulldog standing in goal.  McAfee kept composure and placed the ball in the back of the net for the win.

CMS will play at La Verne (1-10-1, 0-8-1 SCIAC) on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
