Women's Soccer Crushes Cross-Street Rivals

The Athenas (5-2-3, 3-1-2 in SCIAC) defeated the cross-road rivals Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (3-5, 1-4 in SCIAC) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon after a scoreless first half.  The Athenas finish the first round of SCIAC play in 3rd place.

With both teams playing hard defense, the Athenas were unable to find the back of the net in the first half despite many chances. After an inspirational talk at half time from their coach, Keri Sanchez, the Athenas came out hard. Within fifteen minutes, Madi Shove (SO, Portola Valley) gave Laura Hagen (SR, Bellevue, WA) [pictured left] a great cross and Hagen put the ball past the Sagehen goalkeeper into the goal.

Within ten minutes, Meredith Doyle (SR, Calabasa) [pictured right] with great pressure, took advantage of the Sagehen's defenders many touches and put the Athenas up 2-0.  Pomona-Pitzer kept fighting with many attempts at goal and dangerous attacks, but the Athenas defense held strong. With less than ten mintues left in the game, Brittany Piñeros (SR, Mukilteo, WA) gave a beautiful cross to find Laura Hagen who finished the opportunity, once again, despite the hard effort from the Sagehen defender, and gave the Athenas the victory.

The Athenas play the Alumni tomorrow at 10:30am and Alma on Friday at home at 3:00pm.
