Athenas Close The Book On Poets

Whittier, California: The Athenas (3-1-2) beat the Whittier Poets 4-0 on Saturday to improve their conference record to 1-0-1 on the season. Rachel Bunting (JR, Eugene, OR) opened the scoring in the 14^th minute off a ball slotted by Laura Hagen (SR, Bellevue, WA). Scooby Phillips (SO, Longmont, CO) padded the lead by scoring two goals in the 29^th and 36^th minutes. Brittany Pineros (SR, Mukilteo, WA) capped the scoring by converting a penalty kick after her initial shot was hand balled by a Poet defender in the box. Overall the Athenas' dominated possession for the majority of the game and outshot the Poets 20-6.

The Athenas hope to carry this momentum into next week, where they will face two tough opponents. On Wednesday they face Occidental at CMS at 4:00pm in a rematch of last year's SCIAC Championship game, followed by Redlands on Saturday.
