CMS Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 16 Chicago 16-7

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team hung tough through most of the first half, but dropped its third game of the season, all to top 20 teams, falling on the road to No. 16 Chicago 16-7 on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Maroons move to 7-2 on the season, while CMS falls to 5-3 with the loss.

Emme McMullen scored twice for CMS, including the first goal of the second quarter to make it a 2-1 game after a low-scoring opening 15 minutes. Chicago scored the next four goals, before Cate Lewison ended the run with 6:16 left in the first half.

Bella Lynch followed with a free position goal with 4:28 mark to close the margin to 6-3, and the Maroons capped off the half with a goal to make it 7-3 heading into the break.

Chicago, though, outscored CMS 4-0 in the third quarter to pull away, adding the first goal of the fourth before Emma Merk scored for the Athenas. The lead peaked at 10 goals, but McMullen, Rachel Leonardi and Bella Lynch were able to find the net in the fourth for CMS to make the final 16-7.

McMullen added three caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead CMS in both categories, tying with Minturn and Merk for ground balls. Taylor Daetz had five draw controls to lead the Athenas, and Kendall Chapko had 13 saves in goal.

CMS will be back in action on Sunday when it faces Colorado College at Chicago in a neutral-site game.
