CMS Women's Lacrosse Dominates in Home Opener, Defeats Occidental 24-4



CLAREMONT, Calif. - Emma Merk and Grace Minturn each had four goals, and Bella Lynch had three goals and five assists for the second straight game as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team coasted to a 24-4 win over Occidental on Saturday in its home opener at Zinda Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 2-0 on the season after also defeating Whittier 21-7 on Wednesday. Occidental slips to 2-2 on the year, all in conference games. 

The Athenas allowed the first goal of the game, but then led 12-1 at the end of the first quarter and 17-1 at the half. The lead reached 20-1 in the third, before Occidental was able to end the 20-0 run. 

A total of 11 different players scored for the Athenas, with Abby Parrish joining Merk, Minturn and Lynch in the hat trick club with three goals. Cate Lewison, Hannah Conte and Amelila Ulmer each had two goals, with Ulmer also adding two assists and Lewison recording seven draw controls for the second straight game.  

Kendall Chapko had five saves and allowed just one goal in the first half to get the win. Lyla Johnston had a solid showing in the fourth quarter as well with four saves. Frances Anderson led the defense with three caused turnovers, while Jessica Sloan-Cooper, Taylor Daetz, and Audrey Donahue each forced two. 

CMS will next be in action when it travels across the street to battle nationally ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
