Balanced Offense Carries CMS Women's Lacrosse to 20-3 Win over Oberlin

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Eight different players had multi-goal games, led by a hat trick from senior Corie Hack and two from junior Emily Cohen, who recorded her 100th career point on her second goal, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team posted a dominant 20-3 win over Oberlin in its final non-conference game on Saturday at Zinda Field.

With the win, CMS now stands at 9-2 on the season, bouncing back quickly from a tough 14-13 defeat to Williams on Thursday night, while Oberlin slips to 3-5 with the loss. 

Hack had three goals and two assists and freshman Sammie Cohen had two goals and three assist to lead CMS with five points apiece. One of Sammie Cohen's assists came on the second goal from Emily Cohen with 25 seconds left in the first half, helping her older sister reach the 100-point plateau (75 goals, 25 assists). 

The Athenas wasted little time taking charge of the game, as the scored five unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes, including two from Hack. Senior Maddie Geary opened the scoring, and junior Zoe Ryan, who played midfield today instead of her usual spot in the defensive unit, scored her first of the season during the run as well. Geary and Ryan would each later add a second goal to join the multi-goal club. 

Oberlin got on the board with 17:22 left in the first half on a goal from Bette Imhoff, but CMS responded with a 7-0 run to open up a 12-1 lead with 5:57 still left in the half. The only player to score twice during the 7-0 run was sophomore attack Julia Mueller, who capped off the run off a feed from sophomore Eloise Shields, who had three assists in the first half. 

Emily Cohen's 100th goal made the score 13-2 heading into halftime, and CMS outscored Oberlin 7-1 after halftime to finish off the 20-3 win. Sammie Cohen and sophomore Sally Abel each scored twice after halftime, while freshman Alex Futterman (two goals), sophomore Brielle Huddy and junior Juliana Clark added goals as well. 

Freshman goalie Emma Goldfield made the start in the first half and had two saves to get the win and improve to 3-1, while sophomore Anna Gillespie played the second half and had three saves. Senior Eryn Rogers led CMS with five caused turnovers, while Hack and freshman Alex Wilson each had four ground balls. 

CMS will be back in action when it returns to SCIAC play with a home game against Whittier next Saturday at 1 p.m.
