Five Athenas named to All-SCIAC teams; Hack is Newcomer of the Year

PASADENA, Calif. – Five athletes from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned honors from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), highlighted by freshman Corie Hack (CMC) named as the Newcomer of the Year, as announced on May 11. Hack, sophomore Mikaela Connell (CMC) and senior Erin Larsen (CMC) were selected to the First Team while junior Cara Cancelmo (CMC) and senior Kate Anello (CMC) were named to the Second Team.

Hack led CMS and was third in goals in the SCIAC season with 27 as a midfielder. She also ranked second in the conference in caused turnovers (20) and shots on goal (50). She had multi-goal games in nine of the 15 she played in. In the 6-5 win over Redlands on Mar. 5, Hack scored five of the team's six goals for the big SCIAC victory.

Connell sits just behind Hack with 29 points on the season and leads CMS with ten assists. She ranks fourth in SCIAC in free position goals-shots at 7-11 and seventh in assists. Her single-game high was scoring five goals including three free position goals against Redlands on Apr. 20. In the final game of the regular season, Connell made three assists and two goals for a total of five points. Last year, Connell was named to SCIAC's Second Team.

Larsen earns her first all-SCIAC honor as a senior. She was second on the team in caused turnovers at 16 on the season and captained the Athena defense. CMS was second in the SCIAC allowing only 89 goals in 11 games for a 8.09 goals against average.

This is Cancelmo's third all-conference selection. She led the team and was fifth in conference with 31 draw controls on the season. Cancelmo was also second for CMS with 25 ground balls and fourth with 14 caused turnovers. Her single-game high was seven DCs in the 11-6 win over Chapman on Apr. 13.

Last but certainly not least, Anello had the best season of her career in goal and earns her first All-SCIAC selection. She amassed almost 900 minutes in the net and totaled 109 saves for a 50.2 save percentage (last year she had just 61 saves). Her personal goals against average was 7.60 this season, significantly lower than the 10+ GAA from the past three years.

Additionally, junior Zoe Pinczower (CMC) was named to the Sportsmanship Team.
