Late push not enough for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Despite scoring four straight in the final fifteen minutes of play, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team was not able to complete a comeback against Montclair State, falling 9-6.

Sophomore Mikaela Connell (CMC) got CMS on the board first on the game's first shot 45 seconds in.

Goalkeeper Kate Anello (CMC) made a pair of saves during the next six minutes but Montclair State eventually capitalized on back-to-back shots to take a 2-1 lead.

Each team generated a few quality scoring chances that led to two shots on goal apiece until Kara Crampton gave the Red Hawks a 3-1 lead just before halftime.

Montclair State came out strong to start the second half with two goals on their first two shots of the period.

The Athenas responded with their second of the afternoon five minutes in to make it a 5-2 game.

However, the Red Hawks once again were able to find the back of the net on consecutive shots and led 7-2 at the 24 minute mark.

The next nine minutes saw CMS pepper Red Hawk goalie Alexandra Tepper with five shots on goal before sophomore Lauren Clubb (CMC) was finally able to put one past her at 15:28.

CMS continued to pour it on offensively and capitalized three times in just over three minutes with goals from freshman Carly Keeney (CMC) and two straight from sophomore Kendall Greenberg (CMC) to bring the Athenas within one with under seven minutes to play.

Montclair State would not allow CMS to complete the comeback, as Lindsay Lare took advantage of a free position shot to extend their late lead to two. The Red Hawks added one more with just under three minutes left to seal a 9-6 win.

Each goalkeeper made nine saves but Montclair State outshot CMS 24-17. The Red Hawks were able to take advantage of their free position opportunities, going 3-5 on free position shots.

Kendall Greenberg led CMS with two goals while Connell had a three point afternoon with a goal and two assists.

Lare, DiPiero and Crampton each had two goals for the Red Hawks and Tepper made nine saves on 15 shots.

CMS (4-2, 3-1 SCIAC) will continue its eight game home stand March 14 against Whitman.
