CMS Beats Whittier For Seventh Straight Win

The CMS Athenas attacked for the entire 60 minutes against Whittier on Parents Field on Saturday and came away with a 19-9 win.  Sophmore Madi Shove (pictured) led the offense with nine goals on 10 shots in the meeting of SCIAC opponents.  Senior Sarah Dick finished with three goals and two assists and close behind was freshman Maddie Bannon with a hat trick. The leading scorer for the Whittier was Carolyn Mukai.

The Athenas dominated from the start of the game as CMS was able to score nine of the first 10 goals of the contest.  Dick, Shove, Bannon, and Molly Murtaugh were all able to net one or more to total eight for the Athenas in the first 20 minutes of play.  The Poets answered back with a score from second leading scorer, Mukai, off a free position shot.  Kaitlyn Desai chimed in with a goal, before the Poets scored the next three goals in row.  With the score at 9-4, 23 minutes into the half, Shove added two more and the Athenas had a convincing lead, 11-4, going into the break.

Shove went on to score the first two goals of the second period, to have four straight goals.  Bannon added another and the Athenas climbed to a 14-4 lead.  Mukai and leading scorer Shaina Denny, answered back with back-to-back goals off of free position shots to make the score 14-6.  The Poets tried for the comeback and scored five goals in the second half.  However, their efforts could not compare to the scoring power of the Athenas.  Murtaugh, Dick and Desai all completed goals in the second half and finished the scoring offense at 19.

Senior goalie Katie Campbell-Morrison led the defense who was able to keep the scoring in single digits.  The defense played tough and held the Poets to only four goals in the first 30 minutes and five in the second.  Campbell-Morrison tallied 11 saves in the competition.

This was the Athenas' seventh consecutive win.  They rise to 12-2 record overall and 7-0 in SCIAC play.  CMS will face cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer on Parents Field at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20.  This game will be their last before SCIAC conference tournament play commences on April 27.  It will also be a game to honor the six seniors that will be graduating this year.
