Women's Lacrosse To Host NCAA First Round

Women's Lacrosse To Host NCAA First Round

On Wednesday, May 12th the CMS Athenas will be hosting the Endicott Gulls of the Commonwealth Coast Conference in the first round of the Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships. The Athenas earned a Pool B bid with a 15-2 record going undefeated in the West Region. This year the Athenas were also crowned the first ever SCIAC Champions. The Athenas are led statistically by seniors Devon Scott (Portland, OR), Colbi Brawner (Bainbridge Island, WA) and junior Sarah Dick (Beverly, MA). This marks the fourth NCAA berth by the Athenas and only the second time they have been able to host. The Athenas are hoping to avenge their 23-8 dismantling by Cortland State one year ago in the tournament.

The Gulls earned the automatic qualifier out of the Commonwealth Coast Conference by defeating Roger Williams 10-4 on Saturday.  This will be the fifth straight NCAA appearance by the Gulls who are still waiting for their first tournament win. The Gulls are led by Valerie Feldman (Albany, NY) who has 100 points so far this season as well as Morgan DeShaw (Danville, NH) and Kristen Micho (Syracuse, NY).

The Athenas have never played the Gulls and have only one common opponent this year- #10 Babson. Earlier in the season, Endicott upset the then-ranked #8 Babson 17-16 in double overtime. The Athenas fell to the same Babson team a week later by a 15-10 margin in Lake Lytal, FL. The Babson loss is the last time the Athenas have lost this season.

This game will mark only the second time that an NCAA tournament lacrosse game has been played in the state of California. The draw is set to go at 3:00 in Claremont at the Pomona lower field.  Entrance to the game will be through the gate along Mills Avenue by the south end of the Pomona track.  Admission will be charged: $3 general admission and $2 for students w/ID/seniors/children.  The first 100 CMS students will be admitted free.
