Athenas Remain Undefeated In SCIAC

CLAREMONT, CA -  The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps womens’ lacrosse team (11-2) used a balanced attack, as the Athenas defeated their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival Redlands, 16-6.

Seniors Colbi Brawner, Devon Scott, and Casey Delano, juniors Molly Murtaugh and Kaitlyn Desai and sophomores Ali Abarmovitz and Allie Haynes led the attack with two goals apiece. Junior All-American Sarah Dick and freshman Madison Shove each chipped in a goal and senior Jennifer Cohen had a team-high two assists on the night.

Dick got things started out for the Athenas with a free positions goal just 46 seconds into the game. The Athenas jumped to a quick 3-0 lead with another free position score by Desai and a Delano goal assisted by Cohen at 22:33.

The Bulldogs (9-5) got on the board with an unassisted goal by Christy Smith at 18:58 but Scott and Shove answered with back to back goals for the Athenas to make the score 5-1 with 15 minutes to play in the half.

The teams traded goals to end the half with Redlands’ Blair Callaghan scoring at the 7:53 mark and for CMS, Cohen dishing to Desai who buried her shot at 7:28 to make the halftime score 6-2.

Smith opened the half with a goal at 27:51 to pull the Bulldogs within 3 goals but that was the closest they would get as the Athenas responded with two quick goals. Murtaugh responded with a free position goal at 27:13 and Scott won the ensuing draw and drove down untouched to make it 8-3.

The Athenas scored eight more goals in the second half with Brawner, Abramovitz, and Haynes each scoring two and Murtaugh and Delano rounding out the scoring.

The Athenas defense held the Bulldogs to only 3 more goals in the second half and were led by junior goalie Katie Campbell-Morrison who had a strong showing in the cage with 12 saves, 2 caused turnovers, and 3 groundballs.
Shove had a team-high 3 caused turnovers and Murtaugh led the team with 4 draw controls as the Athenas held a 15 to 7 advantage in draws.
 
The Athenas remain undefeated in SCIAC play (7-0) with their last conference game coming next Wednesday at Occidental before the SCIAC Championships on May 1st and 2nd.
