CLAREMONT, CA -- The Women's Lacrosse team opened their inaugural SCIAC conference play by narrowly defeating the Whittier Poets 15-12 under the lights in Fritz B. Burns Stadium.

The Athenas started sluggish and the Poets were able to take a 3-1 early lead.  keep the CMS lead to two by halftime. But the Athenas were able to gain two four-point leads in the second half (9-5 and 15-11) which proved to be too much for the Poets.

2009 All-American Sarah Dick (JR, Beverly, MA [pictured]) led the team in scoring with five goals, six shots on goal and seven points. Molly Murtaugh (JR, Wilton, CT) scored three goals with four shots on goal.

Sara Stern (SO, Mercer Island, WA) came off the bench and led the team in groundballs with five. Goalkeeper Katie Campbell-Morrison (JR, Cleveland, OH) had seven saves in the win.

CMS and Whittier had similar team statistics, as CMS had 19 ground balls, 17 turnovers, and 9 clears and the Poets had 18 ground balls, 16 turnovers, and 11 clears. However CMS had majority control of the center circle by out-drawing the Poets 22-7.
