CMS Women's Golf Ranked Third in GolfStat Computer Rankings, Three Athenas in Top Seven

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team placed third in the first GolfStat computer rankings of the 2022-23 season, which were announced this week.

Redlands came in first, followed by George Fox in second, and CMS in third. Centre College placed fourth, with Washington University, Washington and Lee, St. Catherine, Illinois Wesleyan, Carnegie Mellon and Texas-Dallas rounding out the top 10. The rankings will likely change in the coming weeks as more tournaments are played in October.

The Athenas got a big boost from their final tournament of the fall, when they came in first place at the Claremont Challenge, defeating Redlands by 20 strokes. Redlands had earlier defeated CMS at the California State Intercollegiate, but CMS was able to even the score by winning its host tournament with the lowest 18-hole and 36-hole scores in program history.

Individually, CMS has three of the top seven in the country as well, with Stella Cheng, who set a program record with a 67 at the Claremont Challenge (as well as 36-hole record of a 137) ranking fourth. Ether Lee is sixth and Irene Jun is seventh, while Lauren Fue (16th) is also in the top 20.

CMS will be back in action in the spring as it looks to earn its way back to the NCAA Division III Championships, where it finished ninth last year, its fourth straight top-10 finish, including a national title in 2018.
