CMS Women's Golf Shoots -2 to Lead After First Day of Fall Redlands Shootout

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team had an impressive first day of the Fall Redlands Shootout on Saturday at the S Club at Rancho Mirage, shooting in the red at -2 to hold a seven-shot lead heading into tomorrow's final round.

CMS is seven shots ahead of Redlands and eight shots ahead of Pomona-Pitzer, two teams which it finished behind at its opening tournament earlier this week at the California State Intercollegiate.

In addition, the Athenas had three of the four golfers in the field who shot below par for the day. Irene Jun holds the lead after the first round with a -3, one shot ahead of teammate Stella Chang, who had an opening-round 70. Reina Tain also came in under par with a 71, tying her with Hannah Jugar of Redlands for third place.

Jun had an incredible start to her round, opening on the 16th, as she birdied 18, and then picked up birdies on No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 7 to start out -5 through 10 holes. Cheng had three birdies and one bogey on the day, while Tain had three birdies and two bogeys.

CMS will open tomorrow's round with a seven-shot lead as it looks to take the team title in its second event of 2021-22.
