CMS Women's Golf Earns Fourth-Place Finish at NCAAs, Amy Xue Ties for Fourth on Individual Leaderboard

HOUSTON, Texas - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team played its way into the final grouping (top three) for the final round of the NCAA Division III Championships but couldn't make the run it needed to catch the teams in front as the Athenas ended the 72-hole championship in fourth place on Friday at the Bay Oaks Country Club.

CMS was trying to repeat as national champions after winning the program's first-ever title last year, but came up just short. The Athenas were 11 shots behind Williams and three behind NYU heading into the final round, and NYU was able to put together the low score it needed to come back for the win, its first national title in program history. The Violets shot a 294 on Friday (+6), the best score for any team in any round over the four days, to defeat Williams by five strokes (1217-1222).

CMS finished with a 1233 after a 307 on Friday, one shot behind third-place Methodist, which shot a 298 on the final round for the second-lowest score over the four days behind NYU's 294. 

First-year Amy Xue shot an even-par 72 on her final round, including a birdie on her final hole, to finish in a tie for fourth place in her first collegiate championship with a 301, five shots behind individual champion Cordelia Chan of Williams (296), who also shot a 72 on Friday. 

Senior Kelly Ransom also had a strong performance in her final collegiate round, shooting a 74 on Friday to rank second on the Athenas. She moved up seven spots to finish in a tie for 13th place on the individual leaderboard with a 308. Sophomore Mira Yoo also ended in the top 20 with a 309 to tie for 15th place. 

CMS graduates Ransom, who has been a four-year member of the Athena "A" line-up but returns the bulk of its nucleus next year when it will try to win its second national title. In addition to Xue and Yoo, junior Emma Kang and sophomore Emily Attiyeh also return after being part of the CMS five-member NCAA contingent, while junior Taylor Hughes and freshman Tiffany Hu will contend for the team's top five as well.
