No. 2 ranking and finish for Athenas at Embry Riddle

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a second place finish at the Embry Riddle Invitational and a No. 2 national ranking by Golfstat. This is the highest ranking for the Athenas in program history.

CMS was the lone NCAA Division III women's program in attendance at the Embry Riddle Invite at Talking Rock Country Club, pitting the Athenas against stout NAIA programs. The host, Embry Riddle, came out on top with a 912 for the three round tournament scoring sub-300 on the final day.

Freshman Emma Kang (CMC) led the Athenas tying for third place individually. She scored a 236 overall as she improved each round finishing with a 74 on Tuesday.

The wind on the first day wreaked havoc on all teams' scores. Of the five CMS players, all but Kang came in with 80+ on their scorecards for each round, unusual for the low-scoring Athenas. Sophomore Mary Bryan Owen (CMC) was able to minimize her putts on the fast greens and scored an 80 in the first round and then Kang shot a 77 on the second.

Two rounds were forecasted for Monday but darkness descended before all holes were finished. Each of the CMS players had two or three holes remaining that had to be continued on Tuesday morning. Kang, sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC), and freshman Eunice Song (CMC) all dipped below 80 on the final round.

In the 43-player field, the CMS players finished in the top-16. Ransom came in at 246, good for ninth place while Owen and Song tied for 10th at 247. In her home state, freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) placed 16th with a 255. The Athenas played with the best competition in the tournament, Embry Riddle, on both days. Trae Jones from ERAU shot 5-over in the three rounds for an impressive 221 to win the individual title.

With the fall season wrapped up, the Athenas resume play in their traditional season in mid-February with the Walker Cup at Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas, Calif.
