Lowest round in program history for Athenas at CMS Invite
CHINO HILLS, Calif. – On the second day of the CMS Invite, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team scored a 300 for the lowest single round score in program history. The tournament was played at Los Serranos Country Club on the North Course from the gold tees. The Athenas won the tournament with a 608, 14 strokes lower than the second place team, Whittier. Freshman Emma Kang (CMC) posted a 74 in the second round for a 150 overall, good for a tie of individual crown.
CMS held a two stroke lead over Whittier after the first round at 308. All four of the lowest Athenas had scores in the 70s, led by sophomore Mary Bryan Owen (CMC) at 74. Owen showed consistency on the second round to end up with 151 and the second lowest score on the weekend after birdies on back-to-back holes on the front nine.
Contributing to the team score on both days was sophomore Kelly Ransom (CMC) as she improved from a 79 to a 75 on Sunday. Ransom made an impressive 12 pars during her second round. Freshman Eunice Song (CMC) similarly improved from Saturday's round. Her 74 on Sunday tied Kang and Valerie Wang from Pomona-Pitzer for the lowest on the day. Song's back nine on Sunday was 1-under, highlighted by a two on the 121-yard hole 10.
Kang's three birds on Sunday's round led CMS; and two of the three of them were on par fours.
Also playing for the team score were freshman Taylor Hughes (CMC) and junior Cara Brinster (CMC). Hughes dropped nine strokes from the first to second day, ending up with a 79 after birdies on 17 and 18.
Senior Libby Ramsey (CMC), sophomore Nathalie Limandibhratha (CMC) competed as individuals and Ramsey ended up in a tie for ninth at +17 for the tournament.
The Athenas are headed to Prescott, Ariz. for the Embry Riddle Invitational at Talking Rock Country Club Oct. 17-18.
