Athenas Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer and hold onto win at SCIAC #2
WEST COVINA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team took a six stroke lead after the first round and held on in the second round to win by five strokes in the SCIAC #2 tournament. At assistant coach, Julie Lynd's home course, South Hills Country Club, the Athenas finished with two players in the top-5 and three in the top-10 in the conference tournament.
In the first round, freshman Mary Bryan Owen (CMC), sophomore Margaret Loncki (CMC) and freshman Kelly Ransom (CMC) were CMS' leaders coming in with scores of 80, 81 and 85 respectively. On the tough course, CMS made up three of the top six scorers after the first day. As a team, the Athenas scored 332, six strokes better than Pomona-Pitzer at 338.
Ransom posted the lowest score of the day at 78 on the second round, bumping her from sixth up to third overall. She led the field with the best scoring on par threes and had four birdies in the tournament. Loncki shot in the low 80s in each round and finished in fifth and Owen, carried by her first round score, came in at seventh.
Rounding out the scoring for CMS, sophomore Maya Bhat (CMC) finished in 20th and junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC) in 24th of the 38 player field. Junior Liberty Ramsey (CMC) and freshman Nathalie Limandibhratha (CMC) competed as individuals and ended up at 12th and 15th overall, each improving on her score from the first round.
The tournament supported Go4theGoal, an organization that uses the sales of gold shoelaces to helping kids with cancer and their families. Five of the teams wore the gold laces to show their support.
After the win at SCIAC #2, CMS retains third place in conference standings but only ten strokes separate the Athenas from the leader going into the three rounds of the SCIAC Championships April 24-26 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
Redlands' Caroline Ordian led the charge on both days to end up with a 154 (+10). With Ordain's low scoring and consistent play by the rest of the Bulldogs, UR made up the six strokes they trailed Whittier and now lead the Poets by four strokes.
