CMS Women's Basketball Falls to Redlands in SCIAC Opener

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team fell in an early 20-5 hole, came all the way back to cut it to two points on three occasions, but Redlands was able to fight off the challenge and pull away in the second half for a 68-45 win over the Athenas on Wednesday evening at Currier Gymnasium.

CMS slips to 2-5 on the season with the defeat, and 0-1 in the SCIAC, while Redlands starts out SCIAC play at 1-0 and moves to 4-1 overall. Austyn Masuno led CMS with 15 points, while Angelina Roque led all scorers with 22 points for the Bulldogs.

The Athenas scored only five first-quarter points as they trailed 17-5 after the opening 10 minutes. Redlands then started out the second quarter with a three-pointer to make it a 20-5 lead, before CMS dug down and almost came all the way back by halftime. Masuno made a lay-up to get the lead back down to 10 points at 21-11, and Gwen Gilmore followed with a lay-up to make it 21-13.

After Redlands answered with a basket, Grace Florendo knocked down a three-pointer to trim the lead to 23-16, and then converted a lay-up to bring the Athenas within five. The Bulldogs hit a three to stop the momentum, but Masuno, Gilmore and Jocelyn Song all had lay-ups to pull CMS within 26-24 with 1:13 left in the half.

Redlands took a 28-24 lead into the half, but Masuno started the second half with a layup to again bring CMS within two. Flora Durgerian answered another Bulldog basket to make the score 30-28, but Redlands restored its separation with a 10-0 run to go ahead 40-28. Kayla Ishibashi stopped the run with a jumper, but the Bulldogs were able to extend the margin to 48-32 at the end of the third and prevent CMS from making another comeback.

Masuno was the only player in double figures for CMS, although Gilmore came close with eight points off the bench. Alyssa Downs had 18 for the Bulldogs, who held a 37-23 advantage on the boards.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the CMS men's basketball team, which takes on the Sagehens at 5 p.m.
