Athenas put together strong second half to beat Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A 24-point third quarter took the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball (8-5, 4-1) team past Caltech (2-11, 0-4) in the conference matchup on Saturday evening. After a shaky first quarter, the Athenas regained composure and tallied just three turnovers in the rest of the game to win 59-44.

Senior post player Claire Donnelly (CMC) got things started for CMS with an early layup but then turnovers and missed rebounds plagued the Athenas for the remainder of the first quarter.

It was not until CMS scored 13 unanswered points in the midsection of the second, that they retook the lead. During that time, junior Kailee Severt (CMC) shot 100 percent from the field, knocking down three three-pointers. Teeana Cotangco (CMC) dished out two assists for Severt in those four and a half minutes and went on to lead the team with three in the game. Cotangco had an immediate impact on the speed of the game when she came off the bench in the second quarter and then provided quality minutes down the stretch.

The Athenas have had just a handful of games in double digit assists and 14 tonight ranks as the third highest in the season.

The rhythm established near the end of the second quartered spilled over into the third. The Athenas put up 24 points without a turnover in the third quarter alone. Senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) and junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) each tallied two baskets and Severt stayed hot from behind the arc. Glosniak scored the first points in the quarter as she fought through traffic and then pulled up for a jumper.

Caltech's relentless playing style kept the game competitive for all 40 minutes. As the clock ticked down, Grace Peng showcased her ability to hit threes almost at-will. Peng scored nine points in the final quarter including an and-one and ultimately led the team with 22 points on the night.

CMS secured the double-digit win with improved rebounding and ball security in the second half. Severt led offensively with 18 points followed by Donnelly at 11. Leading the boards again was Donnelly, earning her second double-double of the season.

The Athenas sit at 4-1 in SCIAC competition but take a quick break from conference play to face Antelope Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 10 in Roberts Pavilion. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m.
