Pressure from Chicago forces turnovers

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team's first game on the road, the Athenas were unable to overcome a slow start, leading to the 64-36 loss to Chicago. The Maroons brought immense pressure, forcing 27 turnovers and holding CMS to a 24.5 shooting percentage.

Neither team scored for the first two minutes before Chicago broke the stalemate with a layup by Olariche Obi. When junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) entered the game at 4:13, she immediately contributed offensively. Within a minute, Bogle put in two buckets to tie the score at 8-8. The Maroons finished the first quarter with two consecutive buckets to take the 14-8 lead.

The only point for CMS in the second quarter came from a free throw by freshman Maya Love (CMC).

After a full timeout by the Athenas at the 7:11mark in the third quarter, Bogle re-entered and recorded her third basket of the night. Ultimately, CMS more than doubled their score in the third quarter but still had work to do as they trailed Chicago by 23 going into the fourth.

Bogle was the Athenas' leading scorer at 10 points followed by junior Kailee Severt (CMC) at eight. The majority of Severt's points came from going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Teeana Cotangco (CMC) came off the bench and played all eight of her minutes during the second half. Cotangco was 2-for-3 from the field and added a steal and an assist.

Eventually, the lead built by Chicago was too much to overcome. The Maroons scored at least 14 points in each quarter with three players in double digits: Obi, Mia Farrell and Jamie Kockenmeister.

The Athenas face tournament host Washington University, St. Louis on Saturday at 5 p.m. PST
