Athenas put up 77 for first win in Roberts Pavilion

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first basketball game to be played in Roberts Pavilion, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's team beat La Sierra 77-48. The Athenas jumped out to an early lead and were up by as much as 35 in the season opener.

In classic fashion, junior Kailee Severt (CMC) got the ball in her hands shortly after tip off to make the first basket of the season. Severt wound up hitting three-three pointers in the first quarter alone. Also in the initial period, senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) was 3-for-3 without a turnover. CMS shot 61.1 percent on field goals in the first quarter, significantly contributing to the 46.7 percentage for the whole game.

In the second quarter, the Athenas were fouled on five occasions, forcing them to the line. Three starters – Brackmann, Severt and senior Clair Donnelly (CMC) – collectively went 8-for-8 from the stripe. CMS has been known for their success and consistency from the free throw line and finished fourth nationally last season at 76.8 percent.

CMS went into halftime leading the Golden Eagles 50-23.

More of the Athena bench saw time on the court in the third quarter. Junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) made a contested jumper half way through the period and then drained the subsequent foul shot for a three point play. Freshman Maya Love (CMC) earned her first points as an Athena after pulling in an offensive rebound and putting it back up, increasing the CMS lead to 65-33.

Junior Michelle Lanterman (HMC) led the Athenas' scoring in the final quarter. She hit a big three pointer with almost four minutes remaining in the game for the first three of her college career. Freshman Lindsay Cleary (CMC) and sophomore Teeana Cotangco (CMC) each contributed two points in the quarter en route to the 77-48 victory.

Leading the defensive charge were Donnelly, Brackmann, and freshman Gloria Bates (CMC). Senior Jai Dungca (CMC) recorded her first three assists of the season and was the third highest scorer at nine points.

On La Sierra's side, Alexis Davis led with nine points, followed closely by Korie Siets at eight.

Next up for the Athenas is a road trip to Missouri to play in Washington University, St. Louis' McWilliams Classic. There, CMS will face the University of Chicago and the host, Wash. U. on Nov. 18 and 19.
