Big second half and shut down defense for 67-47 win over Bethesda

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball scored 40 points in the second half for a 67-47 win over Bethesda Christian on Saturday night. After last week's win against Caltech, CMS faced a stronger opponent in the Flames and rose to the occasion.

Leading 27-24 at halftime, the Athenas came out and hit two three-point shots by Kyra Ray (KGI) and Kris Brackmann (CMC) to go up 33-26 and begin the separation. During the second half CMS shot 53.8% from the field and held the Flames to a mere 27.6%. Brackmann personally had 13 points in the half and 18 in the full 40 minutes. Another contributor in the half was freshman Kailee Severt (CMC) who went 3-for-4 in just five minutes of play.

CMS blocked five shots of the much taller Bethesda team. Sophomore Claire Donnelly (CMC) recorded two blocks, both in the second half. The Athenas also forced more turnovers and out-stole the Flames 13-7.

CMS' Mara Falahee (SCR) led all players with 14 rebounds on the night, a personal season high. As a team, Bethesda only out-matched CMS in rebounds during the game including 17 offensive.

While the Athenas' offense was clearly impressive, the defense held the Bethesda shooters to just 47 points. Until tonight, the Flames averaged over 67 points per game. Bethesda's leading scorer was well guarded and went 0-for-6. Senior guard Kimberly Scamman (CMC) had four steals, a game-high.

The Athenas (6-3) take a break until Dec. 29 to play in the CMS-Caltech Classic. The Athenas face Johns Hopkins at Caltech Dec. 29 and then then host Milwaukee School of Engineering at 5 p.m. on Dec. 30 at the Linde Activities Center.
