Wittenberg and Wheaton hand CMS back-to-back losses on Midwest swing

WHEATON, Ill. – In its Midwest trip to the Chicago area, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team lost both of its games in the Beth Baker Classic, hosted by Wheaton College on Nov. 21-22. CMS lost 74-71 to Wittenberg in the first game of the trip on Nov. 21 and then lost to host Wheaton 84-66 on Nov. 22. CMS is now 1-2 on the season.

Wittenberg 74, CMS 71 (Nov. 21)
After keeping the game close in the first half, CMS fell behind by double digits late in the second half, only to rally and get within one point at 68-67 with 2:16 remaining after a free throw by sophomore forward Quinn Glosniak (CMC). Wittenberg on its next possession scored to go ahead 70-67. Sophomore forward Kris Brackmann (CMC) then scored four-straight points to give CMS a brief lead at 71-67 after her three-pointer. Wittenberg closed out the game with four free throws to seal the win.

Brackmann led the Athenas with 26 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the three-point line. Senior guard Kimberly Scamman (CMC) added 22 points. CMS' defense held Wittenberg to 37 percent shooting from the field and forced 12 turnovers which led to 21 points for CMS.

Wheaton 84, CMS 66 (Nov. 22)
Against Wheaton, Brackmann scored the first basket of the game and she followed with a three-pointer to give CMS a 5-2 lead, but that would be the only time CMS held a lead in the game. Brackmann had a career-high 31 points in the game on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 6-of-10 shooting from the three-point line.

Midway through the first half, Wheaton opened up its first double-digit lead after Kelly Lawson hit a three to give Wheaton a 21-9 advantage with 11:03 left in the first half. Wheaton would go on to build as much as a 21 point lead in the game.

CMS was plagued by 17 turnovers in the game and were outrebounded 47-33. Wheaton capitalized on its rebounding for 16 second-chance points. The Wheaton bench also outscored CMS 34-9.

During the two games, Brackmann scored 57 points and had 11 three-pointers, earning her All-Tournament team honors. Scamman added eight rebounds, six assists and three steals against Wheaton which led CMS in each category in the game.

Next up for CMS is the David Wells Classic on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29, hosted by CMS and Pomona-Pitzer. CMS plays Augsburg on Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. at Pomona-Pitzer's Rains Center and then closes out the Wells Classic on Nov. 29 against UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m. at the Linde Activities Center at Harvey Mudd College.
