CMS downs Grinnell behind Scamman's double-double

The Athenas beat the Pioneers of Grinnell College 72-58 on Tuesday afternoon in the second game of the CMS/Caltech Classic.  Hamline University beat Caltech 90-58 in the first game at Ducey Gym.  With the non-conference win, CMS improved to 10-1 on the season.  The remaining 14 games on the schedule are all conference opponents.

Kimberly Scamman led the Athenas with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.  She also had five steals and two assists.  Kris Brackmann added 17 points in her first career start.  Brackmann was 11 for 12 from the free throw line and is now shooting 90.2% (37-41) from the charity stripe this season.   Lydia Stariha led the Pioneers with 15 points off the bench.

CMS only trailed in the opening minute of the game, but Grinnell kept the game close until the Athenas went on a 15-0 run over a seven minute span in the first half to go up by 18, a margin that they kept at the half 35-17.  CMS never led by less than 11 points during the second half.

The Athenas dominated the glass outrebounding the Pioneers 40-21 in the game.  Both teams shot free throws well in the foul-filled contest.  The teams combined for 44 fouls with  CMS shooting 26-32 (81.2%) and Grinnell shooting 15-19 (78.2%) from the line

CMS will next play on Saturday, January 4 against Chapman University.  The game will be at either 7:00 or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's 5:00 game.
