Madison Gonzalez Earns SCIAC Hitter of the Week Honors for CMS Softball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Madison Gonzalez of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned the SCIAC Hitter of the Week honor for games through Sunday, April 7, the conference office announced today.

Gonzalez had a key role in helping CMS to a 5-1 week in league games that kept the Athenas at the top of the SCIAC standings, batting 8-for-20 with seven RBI over the six-game span. She had the game-winning squeeze bunt to break a 4-4 tie on Thursday against La Verne in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then factored heavily in both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Occidental on Sunday.

In the opening game against Oxy, Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to put CMS ahead 5-1 in the fifth in a game it would go on to win 5-3. In the nightcap, she had the game-tying RBI single in the top of the seventh with one out to make the score 2-2, before Averi O came through with the game-winning two-run single later in the inning.

Gonzalez becomes the second award winner for CMS this season, joining Jade Johnson, who captured the Pitcher of the Week after a strong performance at the Tucson Invitational in March, including getting the win in a 4-0 shutout over nationally ranked Central (Iowa).

CMS will be back in action for a three-game series with Redlands this weekend, playing the Bulldogs on the road on Friday and then hosting a doubleheader at Athena Field on Saturday at 12 noon.
