Lai Has Seven RBI, Including Inside-the-Park Grand Slam, as CMS Softball Sweeps Oberlin

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Giselle Lai had seven RBI in the doubleheader, ending the first-game with a walk-off two-run single and following with an inside-the-park grand slam in the nightcap, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team swept a pair of five-run games from Oberlin, winning the opener 8-0 and the second game 10-0.

With the wins, CMS stretches its winning streak to seven games as it improves to 11-4 on the season, while Oberlin sees its record fall to 1-9.

Ella Yerkes started the opener and threw her first career shutout, striking out six and allowing three hits to improve to 2-0 on the year. Hannah Adams and Maya Weigel-Murphy combined on a one-hitter in the nightcap, with Adams allowing one hit in three innings and striking out one, and Weigel-Murphy finishing it with two innings of no-hit relief.

The score was 3-0 in the fourth inning of the nightcap with the bases loaded and two outs, when Lai lifted one into the left-center field gap. Oberlin center fielder Wren Morris gave it her best effort, diving at full extension, but the ball landed out of her reach and rolled to the wall. Left fielder Haley Carlson ran it down as Lai kept running the whole way, and the Yeowomen weren't able to connect on the relay throw for a chance to tag her at the plate.

CMS added three more runs in the inning to push the lead to 10-0, as Averi O hit a two-run triple to the right-center field gap, and Riley Cooper followed with a double to almost the exact same spot to make it a seven-run fourth.

Jacqueline Solomon was 2-for-2 in the nightcap with two runs scored, and was the only Athena with multiple hits, as CMS benefitted from five Oberlin errors.

Sarah Loper got things started with a two-run double to right center in the first, Lai had an RBI double in the third to make it 6-0, and then singled up the middle to plate two runs in the fifth to end it in walk-off fashion.

Lai was 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI in the opener, while Kaili Aqui was 3-for-3 out of the leadoff spot and Sophia Nguyen was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

CMS will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts Occidental for a 4 p.m. contest, before facing No. 3 Linfield on Friday at 12 p.m.
