CMS Softball Drops Series Opener to Pomona-Pitzer Following Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team honored its five seniors prior to the contest, but came up on the short end of a 5-1 decision to Pomona-Pitzer in the first of a three-game series on Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

With the win, the Sagehens move to 22-14 on the season and remain tied for second with Redlands in the SCIAC at 13-6, while CMS slips to 24-12 and into fourth place in the SCIAC at 12-7. Both teams are in the SCIAC Tournament, and will jostle for seeding tomorrow in a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer, when the Athenas will try to sweep and move past Pomona-Pitzer into at least the top three.

The five members of the Class of 2023 recognized prior to the contest were Alexis Gero, Kristin LeBlanc, Ari Livi, Heather Shipley and Maren Summers

CMS got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Emma Suh and Destiny Garcia started things off with back-to-back infield singles. After a forceout moved Suh to third, she came home on a wild pitch.

However, Pomona-Pitzer scored all five of its runs in the fourth, all with two outs, as four two-out RBI singles enabled the Sagehens to take control.  Devin Waddell took it from there, finishing with a complete-game four-hitter, as an infield single from Kaili Aqui in the second and a double from Jacqueline Solomon in the sixth were the only hits after the first two batters.

Gero threw two innings of shutout relief in her final regular season home game, leaving runners stranded on second and third with nobody out in the seventh.

The doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer will get underway tomorrow at 10 a.m.
