ORANGE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a pair of games on the road at Chapman, 7-4 and 3-1, completing a three-game sweep and vaulting past the Panthers and into first place in the SCIAC on Saturday afternoon.
With the sweep, CMS now stands at 23-9 overall and 11-4 in the SCIAC, one game ahead of Chapman, which slips to 20-12 overall and 10-5 in league play. Redlands is also at 10-5, who the Athenas face next weekend in another important battle.
In the opening game, CMS trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth, but erupted for six runs, keyed by a three-run homer from Madison Gonzalez. Destiny Garcia and Rachel Sapirstein tied the score by plating runs with consecutive bunts, and Jacqueline Solomon put CMS ahead with a RBI single up the middle. Gonzalez then followed by hitting one over the left-field fence to give CMS a commanding 7-3 lead.
Hannah Adams threw five innings and didn't allow an earned run, while Heather Shipley threw the sixth and seventh to get the save. Solomon was 2-for-4, as the Athenas spread their nine hits as a team up and down the lineup.
In the nightcap, Maya Loper threw six shutout innings to get the win in the circle. CMS manufactured some runs with its speed on the bases, as Kaili Aqui singled, stole second, and then came home from second after an infield single from Emma Suh. Suh moved into second on the throw home, and then came around from second on a bunt single from Garcia.
Five different players had two hit games in the nightcap, with Aqui and Sarah Loper each going 2-for-3, and Suh, Garcia and Abby Thompson finished 2-for-4. Maya Loper scattered six hits and struck out six to get the win and improve to 6-0 on the year, while Jade Johnson allowed just an unearned run in the seventh to get the save.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for a big three-game series with Redlands, when a series win could put the Athenas on the verge of a regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament.
