CMS Softball Drops Series Opener to La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Ari Livi had a two-run triple and stole home as part of a double steal to give the CMS softball team an early 3-0 lead, but La Verne was able to respond and take an 8-3 win over the Athenas on Friday in the first game of a three-game series.

With the win, La Verne improves to 15-11 overall and 3-6 in the SCIAC, while CMS slips to 17-7 overall and 5-2 in league play with the loss.

Madison Gonzalez and Rachel Sapirstein were each 2-for-3 with a run scored for CMS, which finished the game with five hits.

After Livi drove in Gonzalez and Sapirstein with a triple in the top of the second, she came home after Kaili Aqui walked and the two worked a successful double steal.

La Verne came right back, though, with four runs in the bottom of the second, the first three coming on an Alyssa Campbell home run to tie it. After Livi lined out with the tying run on second after a Gonzalez double in the top of the fourth, the Leopards tacked on three more runs in the fourth, and added an insurance run in the fifth.

The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Athena Field.
