CMS Softball Completes Series Sweep of Cal Lutheran to Open SCIAC Play

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team rolled to an 8-0 win in five innings in the opener and held on for a 6-3 win in the nightcap as it took a doubleheader sweep from Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.

The Athenas swept all three games from Cal Lutheran over the weekend to improve to 13-3 overall and start league play at 3-0. Cal Lutheran falls to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in league play with the losses. 

Paige Zimmerman was 4-for-5 in the doubleheader at the plate for CMS, including 3-for-3 in the nightcap. Jade Johnson went four innings to get the win in the opener, allowing six hits and no runs, while Maya Loper struck out 10 in the nightcap over 5.1 innings to get the win. 

CMS scored three times in the second inning and five times in the fourth in the opener. Ellie Novogradac had a two-run double and Abby Thompson had a sacrifice fly in the second. 

In the fourth inning, Thompson had a single for her second RBI, which was followed by a Madison Gonzalez RBI single, a Paige Zimmerman RBI single and an Ellie Novogradac hit by pitch with the bases loaded. 

In the nightcap, Emma Suh hit a two-run triple in the second to open the scoring. Sarah Loper had an RBI double and Kristin LeBlanc hit an RBI triple in the third to push it to 5-0, and Zimmerman had an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-0. 

Cal Lutheran scored three times in the sixth and had the bases loaded, but Hannah Adams was able to get out of the jam and retired the side in order in the seventh to finish it. 

Sarah Loper finished 2-for-3 in the nightcap to join Zimmerman in the multi-hit department. Rachel Sapirstein was 2-for-4 in the opener, and added a 1-for-3 effort in game two. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend for five games, a home doubleheader with Vanguard on Saturday, a home doubleheader with Occidental on Sunday, and a single game with Occidental on Sunday.
